One way to build stronger families is to put family first. Here are some suggestions on how to make changes to increase family connection and create stronger alliances with your loved ones:

  • Eat meals together

  • Build a community of caring adults

  • Tell stories about your life

  • Hold family gatherings

  • Involve children in appropriate family decisions

  • Hold family meetings

  • Go camping

  • Don’t criticize your children in front of other people

  • Encourage, don’t push

  • Attend church or temple together

  • Read together

  • Teach your children to cook, perform chores and do basic maintenance

  • Laugh together

  • Establish rituals and celebrations (e.g., Saturday night game night)

  • Don’t try to be your children's pal

  • Respect each other's privacy (e.g., knock and wait for an answer when a door is closed)

  • Don’t be afraid to talk about sex

  • Treat men and women in your life well

  • Tell your children you love them

  • Listen a lot and talk a little

  • Spend time alone with your children

  • Model as parents appropriate and healthy male and female relationships

  • Have fun together-go to museums, enjoy a walk, bike ride, or play games
